Karl Albrecht and his brother took over his mother’s small grocery store after World War II. They then grew the company and divided it in 1961. Aldi Nord covered north Germany and was controlled by Karl’s brother. Karl took over Aldi Sud. The first Aldi (short for Albrecht Discount) opened in 1962. The discount supermarket chain is now found all over the world, and Karl has retired all control.
