Sir Ian Mckellan is probably most well-known today for playing Gandolf the Grey in the Lord of the Rings franchise. Sir Ian Mckellan was always upfront about his sexuality with his fellow actors, but he never came out publicly until 1988. It was during a BBC radio broadcast about Section 28 that he revealed he was gay. He has since said that he has regrets about not coming out sooner and not having an involvement in the politics earlier.
